To prevent double engagement each gear selector rod, except for the one in operation, is locked in neutral while selecting gears. To prevent accidently selecting the reverse gear when changing from 5th to 4th a reverse lockout mechanism is used.

To optimise the gear change on 1st and 2nd a triple synchroniser mechanism is used, this reduces the meshing time and improves gear change operation. This is a compact devise capable of achieving heavy duty meshing. Key components of the triple synchroniser are the synchronizer ring, double cone and inner cone (please see illustration).
